DRUG ADDICTION CLAIMS THE LIVES OF TWO BROTHERS - NASHA MUKTI KENDRA CAN HELP PEOPLE SAVE LIVES

Punjab has been famously known for the drug menace it has in the state. This can be validated by the fact that over 3 million people are currently consuming one or the other kind of drug accounting for around 15.4% of the population in the state. Talking about the most abused substance, alcohol holds the first place with over 2 million people consuming it in the state. This intensity of substance use is regularly brought to the limelight with the increasing rates of diseases and deaths related to drugs. Here, one such case happened in Amritsar jail where a viral video of an inmate consuming heroin put the focus of the drug menace in the state at the forefront.

This has also brought attention to the need for in the state which can help people get out of the addiction trap and live a fulfilling life. With the best support, people can easily take this life-enhancing decision of de-addiction and make their lives better.

However, in Amritsar Punjab, two brothers died on the same day due to drug addiction. A video of one of the brothers consuming drugs inside a jail in Amritsar went viral putting the focus back on the acclaimed drug state.

In the words of a relative of the brothers, Rohan (20) and Hargun (24) died on October 15, 2022. They were long-term drug addicts and hailed from a family with a poor financial background. When Hargun was caught by the police in possession of drugs, he was sentenced to imprisonment in Amritsar jail. Soon as he started experiencing withdrawal symptoms, his health started deteriorating and was admitted to the hospital where he took his last breath, as added by the relative. His brother Rohan was admitted to a Nasha Mukti Kendra and was brought back home for Hargun’s cremation. There, he got hold of heroin and due to a drug overdose on the same day, he died too.

The parents of the two were separated and both of them lived with their father, according to a helper at the Durgiana Temple. However, the family did not lodge any complaints regarding their sons’ deaths, as per the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Gurpartap Singh Sahota.

Followed by this, days later, a video showing inmates consuming drugs inside Amritsar jail went viral. This was also discovered that Hargun was lodged in the same jail. The video was shared by Sukhraj Singh, the sarpanch of village Manwala and according to him, “I was arrested in an assault case two weeks ago and was in jail for five days. I noticed that Amritsar jail was a haven for drug smugglers and addicts. I have arranged this video from sources who wanted this to come out.”

Further additions were made by Punjab’s Jail Minister Harjot Bains when he said that he has taken strict note of it and a thorough investigation will be conducted by the police. He also warned that all the individuals involved from the jail department will face consequences. Moreover, the death of the two brothers has also raised doubts regarding the claims of the Punjab Government and the police where they claim that the state’s drug menace has been curbed.

Not only this, this was the second case of brother drying allegedly due to drug addiction in the last two months in the Majha region.
